The Flower of Lowell
Handwritten on each flower is a listing from the 1836 Lowell Directory, Female Supplement. The Female Supplement, printed only for the year 1836, included the names, employers, and residences of the women and girls who worked in Lowell’s factories --“the mill girls”. The flowers honor these all but anonymous individuals who were such a powerful force in New England’s history, industry, and economics. Set on the University of Lowell's South Campus, viewers were encouraged to take flowers until the installation disappeared.
