Take Wing
Take Wing was commissioned for the annual the arts and music festival, Art Beat in Somerville, MA. Migration was the theme of the festival. The project featured 1000 abstract paper "butterflies" attached to six trees throughout Davis Square. Viewers were invited to take the butterflies and use an attached safety pin to wear them, so that butterflies migrated through the crowd.

Fragments of traditional songs dealing with emigration and travel were handwritten on the wings of these "butterflies". The songs included multiple versions of "Shenandoah", "Leaving Liverpool", "Farewell to Nova Scotia" and "Pretty Saro" as well as others. These songs went through their own travels from person to person, evolving as they traveled. As the butterflies moved through the crowd of Art Beat it was as though the songs were also taking wing and migrating.
