Fates & Furies: America
With Fates & Furies: America, Verlin explores the mythic sagas of American history. She takes ship- ping manifests from the 19th century New Bed- ford whaling fleet and turns them into a bloody whale carcass --- vital records of pre-Revolutionary Boston become a heart beat—and “The Battle Hymn of the Republic” spills out like a river of blood. This body of work takes historic events and examines them not as facts un- folding, but as stories that go to the root/route of American identity. Verlin asks viewers to re-examine their own world-view and to discover how history continues to reverberate within them.
