Observing how users troubleshoot in 3D

Contextual inquiry | Observation guide design | Qualitative analysis | Review of analogous products

With limited time and resources, I ran an internal study using contextual inquiry and was able to discover the workflows and tools that users need to troubleshoot a complex 3D application for safeguarding industrial robots. I recommended three different approaches to the proposed feature with different scopes. Having identified limited potential impact for users, one recommendation was to not build the feature until it could be adequately addressed. This approach was selected, saving critical development and design time.

Identifying & prioritizing usability barriers in a beta haptic design application

Expert evaluation | Usability testing | Moderation guide design | Survey design | Task analysis

The organization that my team and I worked with were about to launch a new beta product for designing haptic experiences. With no prior usability work completed, our objective was to identify usability issues prior to the launch.  However, after completing an expert review and conducting user testing we had identified not only major usability issues but also a fundamental mismatch between the product and user expectations.  Ultimately, the organization opted to delay the launch.

Discovering what successful email marketing means to small businesses

In-depth interviews | Moderation guide design | Survey design | Qualitative analysis | Literature review

My team was presented with the question “How do users track ROI for digital marketing?” However, we learned through our initial research that what mattered most to users went beyond the scope of the original question. Defining success and feeling successful were much more nuanced than originally assumed. We were able to reveal through exploratory user research this disconnect as well as blind spots in the organization’s product offerings.

Design for low literacy banking

Workflow design | Wireframing | Interactive prototype | Literature review

Navigating the world with the reading skills of a 9 or 10-year-old can be a treacherous and frustrating experience with essential products and services being written at a high school reading level. For this academic project, I designed a banking application that can support users with low-literacy and low-financial literacy. I researched user needs for both UI design and product requirements and created an interactive prototype banking application based on this research.
